Lap Joint

A lap joint is a robust belt connection method where both belt ends are stepped and overlapped. While it requires more time to install or replace than a mechanical joint, the result is a stronger, seamless bond. By unscrewing the lap joint rods, the belt can still be opened for maintenance or replacement. We offer various lap joint setups—like 2-2-2 and 3-3—so you can tailor the joint to your belt’s pitch and fabric configuration.

Lap joint over 6 pitches, in 3 phases of 2 pitches: 2-2-2

In the 2-2-2 configuration, the belt is overlapped across six pitches in three phases of two pitches each. This means a belt with three fabric inserts always retains two inserts fully intact at each stage, enhancing tensile strength without making the joint overly rigid. The stepped layers create a thicker section but also help distribute stress more evenly along the overlap.

Lap joint over 6 pitches, in 2 phases of 3 pitches: 3-3

A 3-3 lap joint covers six pitches in two phases of three pitches each. It’s simpler than the 2-2-2 design but can be thicker and slightly less flexible. Depending on your belt’s fabric count and overall thickness, 3-3 can still offer excellent strength and durability, while requiring less precision in stepping.

Beyond 2-2-2 and 3-3, there are numerous ways to stagger the belt ends—such as 1-5-1 or 2-3-2—depending on pitch length, fabric layers, and load requirements. Lap joints require precise stepped belt ends that fit perfectly together, secured by lap joint rods, pilot bolts, and threaded plates. Because multiple layers of fabric overlap, the joint section is thicker than the rest of the belt, offering enhanced tensile strength.

Compared to mechanical joints, lap joints are more time-consuming to install but provide a smoother, more durable connection. They can be reopened by removing the lap joint rods if adjustments or replacements become necessary.
