The FRD Series friction drive wheels are a heavy-duty alternative to the HS Series, specifically designed for high-traction applications. Built from cast iron and finished with a rubberized contact surface, these wheels ensure reliable drive performance, even under demanding conditions. Unlike sprocket-based systems, the FRD Series provides belt propulsion through surface contact with the rubber traction belt—offering a pitch-independent solution that reduces mechanical complexity and the risk of misalignment.
Thanks to their high contact pressure and rugged design, FRD wheels are especially suited for machines that require greater grip or operate in less ideal environments (e.g. dusty or wet conditions). The wheels can be supplied with a bore and keyway (according to DIN standards), and are compatible with most standard mounting configurations. Ideal for use where other friction wheels might slip or wear prematurely, the FRD Series brings robust power transmission with minimal maintenance.

The FRD Series is designed for maximum traction and durability in demanding environments.
Friction drive systems use surface contact rather than mechanical engagement to move conveyor belts. This makes them ideal for applications where pitch alignment is variable, or where traditional sprockets are not feasible. In Broekema’s product range, friction drives like the HS and FRD Series offer reliable belt propulsion with fewer wear points and a more straightforward design.
When selecting a friction drive, consider factors such as belt material, load conditions, required grip strength, and environmental exposure. The FRD Series provides a solution where extra torque and belt contact are needed—especially in dirty, wet, or high-resistance applications. Combined with proper belt maintenance, a friction drive setup can extend service intervals and reduce the risk of belt slippage or damage.
