HS series - Rod drive

The HS Series sprockets are a reliable solution for rod-driven web systems and are named after Broekema’s founder, Mr. Hamminga, who introduced this drive principle in the early 1950s. These cast iron sprockets are designed to engage directly with the rods, offering a secure and slip-free drive — especially valuable in heavy-duty agricultural applications. The traction belts are only guided over support fingers, meaning they are not driven themselves.

The HS Series is intended for webs with rods that are flat on top and convex underneath, typically in a double-belt configuration. For correct operation, the support belt must be kept low (e.g. EN0300 or DN0309), otherwise the belt can lift and cause the rods to jump out of the sprocket.

A key feature of the HS Series is its split design, allowing for easier installation and maintenance without removing the entire shaft. Sprockets can be supplied with bore and keyway according to DIN standards, and other configurations (e.g. set screw) are available upon request.

Rod-driven sprockets like the HS Series are commonly used in conveyors where precision and traction are essential — especially in harvesting systems. Unlike friction drives that rely on surface contact, rod drives lock into the rod itself to eliminate the risk of belt slippage, even under high load or variable conditions.

Choosing the correct drive method depends on the configuration of the web: rod spacing, belt type, cam profile, and shaft setup. The HS Series excels in scenarios where reliability, mechanical strength, and minimal belt wear are priorities. Its cast iron construction and replaceable design elements make it a long-lasting choice for professional equipment.
